Summary Urbanization is an important demographic shift worldwide, marking a nation's march from an agricultural based economy to an industrialized and service-based economy. By 2050, over 70% of the world's population would be living in cities. Urbanization is one of the leading global trends of the 21st century that has a significant impact on health. The factors influencing urban health include urban civic facilities, urban governance; population characteristics; communicable and non-communicable diseases due to urban life style, social and economic development; health management; and food security. Urban health caught the attention of the Government of India only around 2002, when the National Census showed a 5% increase in urban slum population between 1990 and 2000. In 2007, the Municipal Commissioner of the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state, India was exploring options to improve the healthcare delivery system to meet the healthcare needs of the Ahmedabad slum population
