Summary For decades, rural practitioners have been pioneers in gaining hospital privileges for psychologists; however, to date, only 17 states and jurisdictions have passed laws authorizing psychologists to practice in hospital settings. This volume is designed to aid the rural psychologist in educating rural hospital administrators, hospital board members, medical staff, and rural citizens about the valuable contribution psychologists can make to patient care. /// The book covers the history of psychology's advancement in hospital settings. Contributors also describe successful collaborative models with physicians and community mental health service providers and highlight the challenges and rewards of working in rural areas. The volume illustrates the greater quality of care that can be achieved when psychologists are made part of an interdisciplinary health care team--a model of care that will benefit both patient and hospital.
