Summary How does Finland manage to produce so many world champions in motorsport or New Zealand to be the undisputed leader in rugby with relatively small populations? The reason is that they have known how to identify and exploit particular "natural" conditions, such as the skilful driving that Finns must have had since they were adolescents on terrain always covered with snow, and the momentum that Maori rugby players imprint on their runs. Chile is a country in development that is located very far from the main centers of advanced science, but has unique natural characteristics that can place it at the frontier of research worldwide: Extensive areas of exceptional skies to explore the universe and develop astronomy; privileged access to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic territory with its research potential; extreme natural events, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and floods, which due to their repeated occurrence allow the study and development of new technologies that help better anticipate and resist these phenomena; immense extensions of land exposed to the sun in unique conditions and that possib encourage new studies in solar energy; or being an unknown as to how this territory allowed human development in the most inhospitable environments on the planet, among others, are all great opportunities for scientific study. The challenge posed by this book is to take advantage of these unique characteristics and get the best experts in the world to use the national territory as a new and revolutionary natural laboratory to work together with their local peers in areas where Chile has comparative advantages for doing science. with national and global impact. The invitation to participate in this new project is open to scientists, academics, politicians, entrepreneurs, and all those who believe in achieving new and better opportunities for progress and quality of life through innovative, sustainable and inclusive technologies
