Summary |
This dataset is designed for teaching dialogical analysis of documents such as, in this case, speeches. These data were analysed by Dr. Joe MacDonagh from Technological University Dublin's School of Business & Humanities and are drawn from a publicly available transcript of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's first speech as Prime Minister, outside 10 Downing St., in 2019. The example focuses on how politicians' speeches can be qualitatively examined as dialogue in which they suggest certain perspectives and answer potential criticisms before they are made. The analysis shows the rhetorical devices speechmakers use and the way in which we can identify the themes they seek to put across to the audience for the speech. The analysis is accompanied by questions for use with students and another dataset from PM Boris Johnson, which can be analysed by students in lectures or tutorials. The dataset files are accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide |
