Summary This dataset explores the use of a manual technique for conducting a thematic-network analysis of ethnographic field notes. The data are provided by Elena Hailwood at Cardiff University and are part of her PhD study. The example draws from field notes made by Elena at a training course for a school mindfulness programme. The discussion is hoped to serve as a practical illustration of how thematic network analysis can be conducted by hand. In addition, the article discusses what circumstances might be appropriate to conduct analysis by hand as well as advantages and limitations of this approach compared to using digital technologies (such as qualitative data computer software). Manual methods may be beneficial for students who prefer to "get a feel for" their data, to visualise connections, and to work in a creative manner. Furthermore, this approach may be valuable to undergraduate and master's students who may not have access to expensive analytic programmes. The dataset files are accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student guide
