Summary The tsunami that hit parts of Sāmoa, American Sāmoa and the Niua Islands in northern Tonga at the end of September 2009 took almost everyone by surprise. Many people were later thankful that the giant, destructive waves came in the early morning when most of the children were at schools, that were for the most part, located on higher ground. Nevertheless, the tsunami was devastating, resulting in many deaths and widespread damage to the coastal zone - to buildings, roads, crops, and infrastructure such as communications, electricity and water supplies
