Summary In 1939 the great contralto Marian Anderson was denied the right to perform at Washington's Constitution Hall because of the color of her skin. Ms. Anderson's Easter Day concert is remembered as a historic milestone in the pre-Civil Rights era and inspired future leaders, including Martin Luther King
