Summary |
"In Bushfire Summer: Heat Wave, we discover how the people of Stawell in Western Victoria dealt with the extreme weather that came their way on New Year's Eve 2005/6. The fire danger index - which causes concern if it rises above 7.5, was measuring a staggering 99. Fire fighters all over the state were waiting for the inevitable. Lightning struck a tree in the forest near Stawell a few days earlier, and the heat and wind on New Year's Eve fanned the smouldering roots, which soon became an aggressive fire which couldn't be stopped. The toll was seven and a half thousand hectares of burnt land, 11 homes destroyed and thousands of dead sheep, before the weather changed and helped to halt the fires. It seems that each year tops the last as the hottest on record, as global warming takes hold. And that can only mean more fires in the future." -- website |
