Summary When Colin Met Joyce is a remarkably unique love story about two Australians whose shared love of life and unwavering passion for equality has kept them together for over 40 years. Bridging the gap between white Australia and black Australia, the film provides a fascinating insight into what it is like to grow up in a mixed race family, and reminds us about the challenges involved in influencing political and social change. Joyce Clague is a vibrant and deeply passionate Aboriginal woman, contagious in her enthusiasm and unstoppable in her pursuit of equality. Colin is Joyce's more reserved husband, equally passionate about equality and as enamoured with Joyce as the day they met. Together they have challenged many laws, brought about real change for Aboriginal people, fostered nine children and raised four of their own, one of whom is blind.Colin met Joyce in 1964 at the Asian Christian Youth Conference in the Philippines. Part of the conference involved a live performance for which Colin asked Joyce to sing. It took some convincing and a lot of persistence, but Joyce eventually agreed to help Colin, who says "once I started chasing her, I just couldn't stop." Living mostly in Joyce's home country in northern NSW, Colin and Joyce have never stopped campaigning for social change. In 1968 Joyce caused a major stir when she stood for the seat of Stuart, and in 1977 she was awarded the Member of the British Empire in recognition of her services to combat racism. Pauline Clague, one of Joyce's daughters and the producer of When Colin Met Joyce says of her parents "They taught me to be independent really early and to think on my feet." One of Pauline's sisters, Grace Clague says Joyce and Colin taught her "that if there is a fear, just keep going. Keep going, and going - until you can beat that fear."When Colin Met Joyce is an uplifting documentary about two wonderful Australians whose love for each other, their family, their people and their country is inspiring. Months after The National Apology, this documentary is beautiful reminder of the people who have never stopped trying to bring about a fairer Australia.
