Summary |
This new seven-part series tells the story of the birth and flourishing of civilisation in the Middle East and its huge influence on the West. According to the program, any history that starts from an ancient Greek perspective distorts the true path of civilisation, for much that happened in the West was only on the margins of the real engine room of civilisation. For crucial phases in world history, the political, economic and cultural centre was the Middle East. From the foundation of science, monotheism, commerce, justice, civil rights and artistic expression - look eastward. The first episode follows the birth of civilisation in Anatolia and the Middle East. Around 12,000 years ago hunter-gatherers paused in Gobekli Tepe and started to build the world's first structures. Two thousand years later they began to settle and farm, followed by the rise of agriculture, governance and writing in Mesopotamia. The program visits ancient Babylon (Iraq) and Mari (Syria) to explore the world's earliest cities. It looks at Alexander's arrival in Troy and his conquest of the Persian Empire - a journey that made him realise what he owed to the East.
