Summary Johnny-Cake is a traditional story about a cake that escapes from the oven and rolls away. It rolls faster than any of the characters who try to catch it until it meets its fate in the shape of a wily fox who tricks it into stopping and eats it. Some children try to find out which things will roll like a cake. What do they have in common? A running rabbit introduces the letter 'r' with the magic pencil demonstrating its formation. The children open a baker's shop in the garden and viewers have a chance to join in with the song Five Currant Buns. This series aims to encourage children in the early stages of reading, mainly through the enjoyment of shared stories, rhymes and reading practice; to help them to develop the skill of anticipation in reading for meaning; to demonstrate the differences in letter forms and 'sounds', concentrating on the consonants and blends in the initial position and using this letter knowledge as an aid to reading.Through the use of action, animation and imagery, the programs should sustain the children's desire to read while providing practice in using letter knowledge, language structure and contextual clues to develop mastery of the reading process.**Please note that this program/series has been created from masters kindly provided by DECS Tape Services in South Australia. These recordings have been collected over a period dating back to the early 1990s and as such, the picture quality may be of variable standard
