Summary |
This case study provides the narrative summary of a PhD-level study exploring womens perceptions of menstrual problems and the influences on their seeking advice and treatment. Inspiration for the project arose from observations of clinical practice and discussions with nursing students which highlighted a number of women in their early to late 30s consenting to undergo a hysterectomy for menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding). The available literature offered widespread support for the operation and a complete solution to the heavy bleeding, but my interest was with the implications for women undergoing the operation which would bring about an end to all future childbearing opportunities. I discussed my interest in exploring how women reached such an important decision with the senior Obstetrics and Gynaecology Consultant who encouraged me to attend the clinics and see for myself. With support in the clinical setting, I put forward a research proposal to reputable academics based on the extensive amount of medicalised literature indicative of the diagnosis and management of menstrual problems but with little regard of the impact of what it might mean for the individual woman. This narrative offers new researchers an insight into the structure of my thesis, from the importance of the literature providing background to the study through to the choice of research design, data collection and method of data analysis, introducing the concept of reflexivity as a point of interest and the need for researchers to address the shared impact of the researcher on research participants as well as research participants on the researcher |
