Summary The Constitutional Convention met in Old Parliament House, Canberra from Monday 2 February to Friday 13 Feburary 1998, to allow public participation in the debate about whether Australia should become a republic. The Convention delivered the Government's election commitment to consult the Australian people on the republic issue. The Convention resolved that the 'bipartisan appointment of the president model' republican model should be put to the Australian people at a referendum. The Prime Minister has confirmed that, if re-elected, the Coalition will conduct this referendum in 1999
