Weed control is one of the major input costs of crop production. In most cases, farmers depend on herbicides to provide that control to produce an economic crop. It is common that weeds result in 10-30% yield depressions and in some cases can cause complete devastation of the crop. The dependence on herbicides for weed control has led to the major problem of herbicide resistance particularly in Australia. In environmental terms, it is clearly undesirable for farmers to be introducing into the environment herbicides which do not work or have impaired efficiency. In addition, it is important to preserve the life of safe and effective chemicals such as bensulfuron for as long as possible through seeking other options which can be used in an integrated weed management (IWM) approach.
