Summary "This series of twelve studies of the influence of motion pictures upon children and youth has been made by The Committee on Educational Research of The Payne Fund at the request of The National Committee for the Study of Social Values in Motion Pictures, now The Motion Picture Research Council. The studies were designed to secure authoritative and impersonal data which would make possible a more complete evaluation of motion pictures and their social potentialities. Out of 100 children in the junior high schools of large urban centers approximately 64 attend the movies once a week. Twenty-seven go two or more times and 7 go three or more times a week. What are the movies doing to the conduct and attitudes of these children? In Motion Pictures and the Social Attitudes of Children Professor Thurstone and his associates have reported studies designed to answer one aspect of this question. By rather precise experimental methods they have shown that it is possible to change children's attitudes in a given direction by showing them a single motion picture which has been selected for the purpose of producing that effect. Our problem in this section of the reports is to determine the influence, not of a single motion picture, but of the child's total motion-picture experience on a wide variety of conducts and a wide range of attitudes. The two problems need to be sharply distinguished"--Create. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved)
