"The early understanding of prairie wetland ecology was developed from research and conservation work inspired by the droughts of the 1930s. Although most waterfowl and wetland studies over the next 40 years were descriptive, they highlighted the importance of conserving northern prairie wetlands as habitat for the wide array of wildlife species occupying these dynamics systems. What was needed to advance management theory and practice was true experimental data so that hypotheses derived from published models of marsh wet-dry cycles could be tested." |
