Summary Led by Sajjan Jindal, JVSL was the first company in India to install a new integrated steel plant in Toranagallu, Karanataka, India, with the COREX method of ironmaking in 1995-1999. This iron making plant was to become the third in the world to use this technology, but it had installation and commissioning problems that led to the freezing of the hearth (where liquid iron is stored). There were several factors that led to the freezing of the hearth: unexpectedly heavy rains in October, low frequency of power supply, not having the proper feeder for the materials supply line, not having the slag granulation plant ready, uncovered conveyors and derailment of the materials movement line. During the project phase, JVSL asked an inexperienced contractor to fabricate a new material. This material had never been manufactured in India. As a result, in October 31, 1998, the entire 400 tonnes of hot metal (or liquid iron) was frozen, possibly for the first time in India. This unprecedented problem led to not only a project delay, but also in a loss of revenue amounting to millions of dollars. Undeterred by such major problems, the project team corrected the problem and the plant was operational by August 1999
