Summary |
The decline of English music following the death of Purcell in 1695 is well-known. Not until the closing years of the 19th century, when Elgar's genius found its full expression, could England once more clean its own great composer. During the intervening 200 years, public concerts continued to thrive and expand, stimulated in particular by handle, who settled in London in 1710 and, later, by the visits of many distinguished composers such as Haydn and Mendelson. Unfortunately, the fashionable view of Rose that only continental composers merited serious consideration. Such composers as England could boast continued to be ignored by the musical establishment and the general public. In the meantime, cathedrals up and down the country continued their unchanging tradition of daily services, requiring their organists to write new music for both choir and Oregon, as they always had done. In their own modest way, therefore, the cathedrals maintained an English tradition at a time when public music-making demanded the latest from Europe. - Program notes |
