Summary This volume examines the “New Wave” of research in cognitive neuroscience that has developed primarily in the last decade. It is divided into four sections. The first section looks at emotion and how it relates to perception and attention, as well as the link between emotion and cognition. It also discusses genetic and developmental approaches to emotion. The second section is about self and social cognition and addresses face recognition, the perception of nonverbal cues and perception-action links, impression formation, empathy and social interaction, and drawing inferences about others’ mental states, among other topics. The third section deals with higher cognitive functions and explores topics such as conflict monitoring and cognitive control, decision-making, categorization, thinking, the hierarchical control of action, expectancies and numerical cognition. Finally, the fourth section demonstrates how disruptions of the mechanisms of emotion and cognition cause abnormal functioning in individuals. These conditions include post traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety. The chapters in this volume describe the psychopharmacology of cognition, the theory of mind, the neuroscience underlying the regulation of emotion, and neuropsychological and neuroimaging evidence that supports the special status of self-knowledge in memory
