Summary Gaile, who has published on Peter Carey and other Australian authors, contends that taken together, Peter Carey's novels make up a fictional biography of Australia. He shows how Carey exposes the deceptions that make up traditional representations of Australian history and replaces them with a new national story, which is no more real but alerts the reader to the constructed nature of history in general. Focusing on allegory in his works, especially Illywhacker and Oscar and Lucinda, he details how they are revisionary in the context of postmodern, postcolonial, and poststructuralist theories in history, as Carey stresses distortions of the imperial tradition of colonial history and reveals the pretensions of traditional history to present a unified, objectified and truthful account of events
