"The importance of studying sociality in childhood is attested by frequent references to its consequent development into socially significant behavior in the adult; by studies indicating the importance of one's sociality in the effective total functioning of the individual; and by studies suggesting the differential modifiability of social behavior at various stages in the development of the person. The following chapter reviews the literature which seems to cast light on some aspects of the nature and functioning of the affiliative attitude. For the present, it may suffice to say that, while some valuable information about social behavior is available, little is known directly about that aspect of personality which we shall call sociality. Just as it seemed necessary to apply a new term although related concepts have been discussed, so it seems desirable to undertake a new analysis of the variable although information about some aspects of its functioning seems to be available in other studies. This study will analyze the functioning of sociality, the degree of acceptance with which an individual reacts to others of his own sex and age. It will also examine the consistency of sociality in boys ten to twelve years of age and investigate two dimensions of its functioning, extensity and intensity. Other questions for which answers will be sought are: What is the relation between sociality and relations with peers? How accurately do individuals rate themselves in sociality? What is the relation between self-ratings and self-satisfaction? How do negatively toned incidents, such as rebuffs or aggressive actions, affect the expression of sociality in situations involving interaction among individuals?"
