Summary |
"'Cinemas of Australia via USA' is an edited anthology of previously published documents of Australian cinema - building history for over 90 motion picture theatres, together with an introductory text detailing the development in the USA of cinema design which influenced the architecture of their Australian counterparts. In the introduction the author commences at the time nickelodeons were beginning to become decorated in a style which anticipated the great picture palaces of the 1920s. He describes the development of the "atmospheric" cinema, expounds on the difficulties of defining the Art Deco style and concludes with a glimpse of the Australian architects whose practices specialised in cinema design. Although the selection of the Australian buildings is arbitrary it includes all the major movie theatres in the capital cities. There are 350 illustrations including plans, sections and elevations of some examples." -- dust jacket fly leaf |
