Summary |
Marko Markovic was only 14 years old when he joined the band of his father Boban Markovic, a veteran trumpeter, and it was only a few years later that his father made him the band leader. Indeed, for the Markovic clan, part of the traveller minority in Serbia, music is a family affair. The great-grandfather used to play for the king of Serbia, and signed a dozen albums that alternate between film music, prestigious collaborations and innovative arrangements. Here, the Marko Markovic Brass Band performs at the Moods Club in Zurich in 2018. The concert took place a few months before the release of their album, *Mastika*, and gave the audience a taste of what to expect. It is an astonishing combination of [Romani] folklore and modern twists. Numerous brass instruments come together in a unmistakably Balkan sound that conjures an atmosphere of vitality, energy and just a touch of melancholy that creates a quite beautiful contrast. Marko Markovic, the modern ambassador for [Romani] music, never fails to leave you enraptured. --Anaïs Christidis Guillemard |
