Felipe IV falleció en 1665 y la noticia de su defunción llegó a Lima en 1666. Aparte de las ceremonias luctuosas principales, también en conventos y monasterios locales se pronunciaron sermones en honor del difunto rey. Este es el caso de la Oración fúnebre a las honras del rey nuestro señor Don Felipe Cuarto el Grande del fraile franciscano Diego de Herrera.
