Welcome to Malississippi! Seeing Bassekou Kouyaté, armed with his faithful Ngoni, that small rudimentary traditional instrument, we might be entitled to wonder how such sheer musicality is possible. And yet, the first few minutes of "Kanougnon," a catchy track that opens the show as well as his latest album (Miri), are enough to set the scene. Crystalline arpeggios, powerful vocals, smooth percussion ... there's something about the Mandingo vibe that's almost impossible to compete with. Whether it's the twirling solos or the impressive talkin' drums (Tama), it's hard to resist the magical wave that washes over us, feeling reminiscent of the blues, an American genre whose roots, according to many, are to be found in Bassekou's own country. It's not long before the wave pulls you under, seeming to creep up on you before you've had the chance to register it. There's no need for complex performances or compositions. In fact, the only trick you will see during this rich concert are the effects that this real guitar hero has decided to plug into his small instrument that some musicologists present as the ancestor of the banjo. Wah Wah, distortion, reverb ... And suddenly the instrument takes on the air of a stratocaster, the kind usually heard at a rock festival. If John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, R.L Burnside and other Delta string players were still with us, they would kill to jam with Bassekou. From Mali to Mississippi and back again.
