Summary |
From his initial training in Havana to his exile in the United States, to his soundtracks for some of Clint Eastwood's films, Arturo Sandoval crossed the second half of the twentieth century like a meteorite. His fabulous performances from the 1970s within the legendary Irakere group, alongside the visionary Chucho Valdés, confirm the great creativity that reigned in Cuba at the time. Rich in experiences (as a complement, listen to the Cuba-Music And Revolution by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker for the Soul Jazz label), this artistic period was admirably transcribed in 1992, on the British stage of the Brewhouse Theatre. Surrounded by a complicit band, the American composer and multi-instrumentalist offers here a broad spectrum of his talent, well beyond the strict Latin jazz framework. Marked indelibly by the coppery flashes of bebop (one thinks of course of Dizzy Gillespie or Charlie Parker, both fans of sunny rhythms), Arturo Sandoval offers a captivating escapade in blues land, scatting like a handsome devil at the bend of an improvisation, and devotes himself to masterful flights of fancy on the piano, his other instrument of heart: impressive.
