Summary Set in the French seaside town of Cherbourg, the all-sung dialogue tells of the relationship between shopgirl Geneviève who discovers that she is pregnant after her garage mechanic boyfriend, Guy, is drafted to fight in the Algerian war. She marries the decent and honourable diamond merchant, Roland Cassard, but lives with the knowledge that her true love lies elsewhere. In 1967, Jacques Demy directed another very personal homage to the Hollywood musical of the 1940s, 'Les Demoiselles de Rochefort', also starring Catherine Deneuve. Award: Cannes International Film Festival (1964): Palme d'or ; Prix Louis Delluc 1963
