On the 14th November 1982 a number of opposition political parties and groups met in a convention to form an alliance. This Alliance was to result in the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) which swept to power in 1986 only to split within a matter of two years and be voted out before a second term after an attempted coup in 1990.
