Cool Summer |
Summary |
Packed with sophisticated interventions and driven by an obvious groove, these concerts by Bobby Hutcherson and Flora Purim reflect a certain ideal of coolness. Present in the heart of the Californian vineyards, the American vibraphonist delivers a set of about thirty minutes which gives pride of place to improvisation. Surrounded by an inspired line-up (for the record, drummer Eddie Marshall does not hesitate to wedge a musical saw between his drums), the virtuoso of the blue note label and close friend of McCoy Tyner gives it his all and infuses the performance with a clear and precise musical touch, far from the emphasis of some. Different in approach but just as interesting, the short gig by the bubbly Flora Purim evokes the musical experiences of the 70s. Helped in this by her husband Airto Moreira as rhythmicist and by the efficient Keith Jones on bass guitar, the carioca singer reveals multiple influences including jazz, popular Brazilian music, but also the psychedelic genre. As such, the sequences modulated using an echo chamber play an essential role. In addition to a certain ingenuity, these parentheses allow the diva of the tropics to reach incredible heights, at the limits of performance possibilities. Vincent Caffiaux |
