Youth-led participatory action research is a collaborative approach that engages youth as partners in research design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination. In contrast to traditional research, young research participants are positioned as co-researchers rather than subjects of research. The purpose of this case is to explore the principles of youth-led participatory action research approaches in the context of health and education research. We present the processes and outcomes from two youth-led projects that are grounded in the philosophies of shared leadership, joint decision-making, trust, and equitable collaboration. The first, the Youth Council for Suicide Prevention, is a youth-led project designed to address the ineffective suicide prevention programs that currently exclude the voices of youth experiences. The second project, Stuck in the Cracks, is a collaboration to develop community connectedness in a low-income neighborhood. Both projects are examples of youth-led participatory action research partnerships that include adolescents in all phases of the research process and rely on them to collect reliable data in populations that can be difficult to engage in research.
