Summary |
Presents a study on the approaches of two men in trying to deal with religious extremists, in Yemen today. They are Hamoud al Hitar, one of the country's leading judges and Chairman of the Yemeni Organisation for Human Rights; and Rashad Mohammed Said, a former commander of Yemeni Mujahedeen in Kandahar and a former prisoner who was redeemed by Judge Hitar. Islam has had a profound influence on Yemen and its culture. Everything in Yemen revolves around the Koran and the legal system is based on it. No judgement may contradict the Koran. Traditional guardians and protectors of the laws are the Ulama, the council of legal and religious scholars. The most popular among them is Judge Hitar, one of those who want to impart their interpretation of Islam in Yemeni prisons. There, they conduct dialogues with religious extremists, trying to convince them of the peaceful and tolerant nature of Islam. Shows the effect of terrorist acts committed in Yemen on the country's economy and reputation, like the bombing of US destroyer USS Cole in 2000 and the French super tanker Limburg, two years later. The Yemenis have worked fervently to be seen fighting terrorism, with initial successes. Judge Hitar's approach to dealing with jailed Islamists prompted the German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to pay him a visit, while on a rare official visit to Yemen |
