History of Yandruwandha and Yawarrawarrka people, originally from the area around Innamincka and the Cooper and Strzelecki Creeks; people scattered across Australia within a century of arrival of Europeans; pre contact background, including geography and climate; observations made by Europeans during early contacts; tools, utensils, decorations, food, toys, toas etc; walking the country; trade; dreaming; social and religious organisation and life; first contact Charles Sturt, 1845; contacts included Burke and Wills expedition, 1860-61 and care of John King; missionaries, then settlers moved into area in eighteen sixties, followed by government representatives such as police; relationships and conflicts with Europeans; effects of settlement on living standards; provision of rations; living on the stations; difficulties with European laws; Aboriginal police trackers; 1890's drought effects on all of the region's people and aid provided; treatment of Aboriginal people and part Aboriginal children including Tilly Rigney (nee Hale); health; looks at facts and fantasy in reports of massacres; argues that despite instances of killing, dietary, social, medical etc. problems and loss of land, culture and way of life responsible for population decline; health provision such as Australian Inland Mission nursing home at Innamincka, Border Nurses, Beltana Pastoral Company nurse and establishment of Flying Doctor Service; despite scattering of the people culture not lost; land claims; negotiated agreements |
