Summary "The foundation of this book is a particular experience in applying some of the principles and methods of social science, especially cultural anthropology, sociology and psychiatry, to the wartime analysis of Japanese morale. The work was done for policy makers in the Government who needed to know about the nature of Japanese morale, its strength, what changes were occurring and what, if anything, could be achieved by psychological warfare. After victory it became possible to re-examine many of the conclusions with the benefit of later information; early diagnoses were compared with how things did, in fact, turn out. Now, due to the lifting of security restrictions, it is possible to report the result. The aim is to present one set of experiences and some suggestions arising from them in the hope that they are pertinent to the employment of social science in a world situation where it is badly needed. In short, there is here an orientation in the light of which a particular account is given and some general conclusions drawn. The presentation is planned in that order: Part I, The Setting, concerns the point of view that permeates the book; Part II, A Case History in Applied Social Science, tells the story of a wartime analysis of Japanese morale; Part III, The Use of Applied Social Science, deals with the implications for the present and future"--Foreword.
