Series The first World War : visual perspectives and narratives
First World War (Marlborough, England)
Summary Electronic reproduction of photographs from albums, official and private papers in the collections of the Imperial War Museums. The photographs showcase the experiences of different armies on the various fronts in Europe and the Middle East, war in the air and war at sea. There are albums devoted to the medical services and organisations such as the Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A., and to the role of women on the Home Front. Many photographs were taken by official and press photographers, and were used in propaganda campaigns. Others are from private sources, and provide a more personal perspective of the conflict. The collection includes portraits of prominent military and national leaders
