Summary |
Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is a great and universal work of art and the most complex creation for the musical stage. Wagner wrote the text and music between 1848 and 1874. It was a monumental undertaking that dominated the best part of his creative life and swept up many complex and often contradictory ideas as it went along. It is an endlessly fascinating work of art, and one that is impossible to fit neatly into this or that conceptual box. A performance of The Ring is a special event, attracting an audience from around the world. This new book by Wagner authority Peter Bassett contains a detailed introduction to The Ring, in which the author explains the mythological background to Wagner's work, the process of composition, and the ideas behind the four component operas. It also offers a complete prose version of Wagner's text in clear, accurate and elegant English, together with examples of musical themes demonstrating the essentially melodic nature of Wagner's score. There are forty full-page reproductions of rarely seen lithographs by Hugo Braune, which alone would make the book a collector's item |
