Summary In 2002, the Australian Government conducted a review of Australia's higher education system. The Government's response to the review was announced in the policy statement, Our Universities: Backing Australias̀‰ Future. Under HECS, which was in place before 2005, the Australian Government set the contribution amount that students were required to pay and students studied in HECS places that were subsidised by the Australian Government. These HECS places will continue to be provided but will be called Commonwealth supported places. From 2005, higher education providers are able to determine student contribution amounts for these Commonwealth supported places within ranges from $0 up to a maximum that the Australian Government sets
