Summary The commercial production and use of transgenic crops is generating much public debate. Some concern has been raised by consumer and environmental groups along with agriculturalists about recent development in the technology. In this climate it may be difficult to capture the full benefits that biotechnology offers. As an element of public and political considerations, scientists are assessing the possible risks posed by genetically modified organisms. Although many scientists accept that transgenic crops and the commodities produced from them present minimal risks, there are issues that have to be addressed, incuding outcrossing and the strategic use of resistance to herbicides and insects. This workshop aimed to expand and elevate the level of debate on transgenic crops and appropriate forms of regulation for Australia
