Summary Te Araroa: Tales from the Trails is a seven-part series that follows well-known television personality, Pio Terei, along his journey through the diverse and rich landscapes of Aotearoa. From the tip of the tail of New Zealand, Te Rerenga Wairua, to Bluff in the South, he travels along the 3,000 kilometre Te Araroa trail; encountering the different settlements, townships and cities that accommodate rural and urban Kiwis.
Pio sets out to uncover the lands and meets the everyday New Zealanders whose humble passion for their whenua (land) infuses a strong theme of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and kotahitanga (unity) into the show. In each episode, Pio crosses a section of the trail, meeting its inhabitants and hearing their remarkable stories; each share their passions and pastimes, many of which are inspired by the local whenua.
Episode One: Cape Reinga
Pio's journey begins at Cape Reinga, where he treks down Ninety Mile Beach to Ahipara. He meets an array of characters including an Australian knife-maker who carves up his walking gear, a sassy 10 year old fishing expert and a colourful Dalmation dance troupe
