Summary This dissertation study was completed with the intent to deepen the knowledge of what is effective within the relationships between treatment foster parents and the children in their care. Treatment foster care is a widely utilized intervention for children in the foster care system with emotional and behavioral disturbance. Although treatment foster care is reported to be promising in its effectiveness with these youth, the great variation in theory, intervention models, and research methods across programs researched complicates the ability to specifically discern the relational components or processes at work. I sought to merge my developed clinical social work practice knowledge and skill base with credible methods of research to explore this relationship intervention utilizing a qualitative interpretive description methodology. This case study provides an example of the application of the interpretive description methodology, to date most commonly used in nursing research, within social work, another applied discipline. This case demonstrates the utility of this method to lend understanding to a clinical practice issue within social work, specifically foster care, to inform practice change. Despite the choice of a useful methodology and careful consideration of the nature of research with children in foster care, this case too will reflect upon the barriers to this research I encountered, including the challenges of partnering and recruitment, acquiring informed consent for children, and data collection for subjects within the child welfare system
