Summary The standard argument for intellectual property rights (IPR) protection is that there is a trade-off between the need to concede monopoly power as an incentive for innovation, and the loss in consumer surplus such a concession entails. From strictly the consumers' point of view, imitation is a good thing mainly because it reduces such monopoly power
