The trachoma story kit -- Regional eye health program, Katherine, Northern Territory -- Eye health in Central Australia |
Summary |
Indigenous adults suffer a disproportionate burden of eye disease compared to other Australians. The current rate of blindness in Aboriginal people over forty years is six times the rate of non-Aboriginal people. The most common cause of bilateral blindness in Indigenous adults is cataract; with uncorrected refractive error being the main cause of vision loss. Up to 94% of this vision loss is preventable or treatable. "See Strong" is a half hour documentary style program that highlights some successful programs operating in the Northern Territory that offer both prevention and treatment options to improve Indigenous eye health. This documentary is part of the Rural Health Education Foundation's Improving Indigenous Eye Health Project which incorporates two educational television programs for health professionals and the community on Indigenous eye health |
