Neurosurgery : case management comparison series
Summary The care for patients with spine disease continues to evolve as physician expertise increases, technology improves, resources grow, and access to information continues to evolve around the globe. However, there is no concise body of literature that shows how experts throughout the world in both neurosurgical and orthopedic surgery would manage a similar disease, patient, or case. To our knowledge, this book is the first attempt to evaluate how neurosurgical and orthopedic spine specialists throughout the world would handle the same patient with a specific spinal pathology in order to demonstrate the diversity of experts, ideas, and management styles and to explore how different experts around the world with different resources, technology, and cultural backgrounds would approach a similar patient. This book is part of a neurosurgical series that focuses on the spinal pathology to accompany the previous book on brain and skull base tumors, as well as future books on cerebrovascular, functional and epilepsy, pediatric, trauma, and neurocritical care. Each case is a chapter in which the patient's chief complaint, history of presenting illness, past medical and surgical history, medications and allergies, social and family history, physical examination findings, and spinal imaging are presented. Four international experts are presented with a case and each expert provides information on how he or she would handle that specific case. This will be a reference for any health care provider, trainee, and surgeon treating spinal disease by providing access to the minds of experts from around the world on management of patients despite geographic differences, differences in access to resources and technology, and even cultural differences that can potentially influence management. This book is the first of its kind to show the similarities and differences in the management of spinal cases among international experts in both neurosurgery and orthopedics from preoperative workup to operative approaches to postoperative care. We hope you enjoy it, and we hope to bring you more of these types of series in the years to come
