Summary |
A glorious grab-bag of information, mostly dismal, about medieval peasant life, as well as a polemical pamphlet important for the understanding of late Victorian and Edwardian England. The author uses his unsurpassed knowledge of medieval sources to discover brickbats which he hurls at Papists, Anglican high-churchmen, aristocratic conservatives, and likewise at the socialists, all of whom, he believes, by romanticizing the pre-Protestant, pre-democratic and pre-capitalist era, are destroying the solid virtues which in his opinion has made Britain great |
