Summary |
The case explains how a cloud-based computing startup, SendGrid, Inc., managed fast growth through unique human resource management practices. In 2014 it was named as one of the fastest growing U.S. companies and in 2017, SendGrid was one among the top 25 SMEs to work for in the California region. The case provides insights into how human resource management practices such as servant leadership, employee engagement with the company's culture and values, and focus on person-organization fit resulted in positive organizational outcomes for SendGrid. The case encourages students to discuss the conditions under which servant leadership can be an appropriate practice for profit-making organizations. After controversial incidents within SendGrid, such as an employee's termination due to social media posts, and dissatisfaction of employees with the company's performance management system, the dilemma facing company leaders is how to sustain SendGrid's growth and build on its accomplishment as "one of the best companies to work for." To resolve this, students are also encouraged to discuss how SendGrid could deepen its commitment to servant leadership and what action steps are needed to demonstrate this commitment |
