Summary |
The authors of the book, both based at the Lowestoft Laboratory and actively researching the species and its fishery, review the current state of knowledge and present the scientific background to the assessment and management of the bass in the context of inshore fisheries. The opening part of the book looks in detail at the biology, distribution, behaviour and ecology of the species, with particular reference to its conservation needs. The second part of the book covers exploitation, including aquaculture, and gives full details of the sports fisheries, commercial fisheries, assessment and economic valuation, marketing, and impact of fishing. The final part of the book describes the conservation, management and future of the bass fisheries. This book will be essential reading for fisheries workers, fish biologists and all those involved in the commercial exploitation of the species, research into its biology, or assessment and management of inshore fisheries |
|
The sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is a species equally important to sport anglers and commercial fishermen. Strong international markets for the bass have ensured that high prices are paid and this has led to increasing competition and the threat of over-exploitation of bass stocks |
