| Summary |
Leading figures on the French stage since before World War Two, director/actor Barrault (b. 1910) and his wife actress Madeleine Renaud (b.1903) were members of the prestigious Comeie Française before establishing their own theater ensemble in Paris. Over the years they performed all the classics and many contemporary French plays, and through their frequent trips became the unofficial ambassadors for French theater to the United States. On this program they present the bittersweet jealousy scene from Moliere's "Le Misanthrope" and recitations from other works of French drama and poetry, among them Jacques Prevert's "Bird", Paul Valois' "Liberté", and a charming fable about animal intelligence. Barrault performs his famous circus horse riding pantomine and discusses the importance of state subsidies to the theater for the good of the country's intellectual life |
