Summary |
Don't Grow Old asks if ageing is something we can prevent or whether wrinkles are just a matter of time. For centuries scientists have been attempting to come up with an elixir of youth. Now remarkable discoveries are suggesting that ageing is something flexible that can ultimately be manipulated. It is leading scientists to take extreme measures (including experimenting on themselves) as they attempt to piece together why we age, and more vitally, what we can do to prevent it.Some very surprising results in the laboratories are challenging what we thought we knew - and some people's bodies are breaking all known rules. There are suggestions that in certain groups of elderly people that age may have more to do with a person's genes than their lifestyle. In the program, one couple experiment on themselves to see if a calorie restricted diet can help them live longer. Another experiment involves a group of over 75s who were forced to live as if it were 20 years previous to see if they acted younger. It demonstrates the astonishing power of the mind over how we age.The program explores whether, one day, one of these breakthroughs will really see our lives extending past 120 years.
