Interest in the subject of precarious work has been gaining traction with researchers since the 1980s when French sociologist Bourdieu (in)famously observed that "precarity is everywhere." (Bourdieu 1998). Associated with the rise of neoliberalism, erosion of labor market security, and loss of contractual protection for employees, precarity has been described as the absence of employment security, reduced access to employment rights (Vosko 2010), increased likelihood of negative health outcomes (McGann et al. 2016) and even as an existential condition, a characteristic of modern working life (Butler 2006). Despite a growing body of research, there is lack of agreement on what precarity is--an employment condition, or a state of being and whether it is experienced in the same way by precarious workers, regardless of context or background. Therefore, in my PhD, I sought to address these ambiguities. I studied the working experiences of three groups of precarious workers: migrants, care, and hospitality employees, through in-depth interviews. Adopting a phenomenological standpoint enabled me to understand precarity as it was perceived and experienced by the workers themselves (Sokolowski 2000). I utilized meaning condensation as an underrepresented method of content analysis (Kvale 2008) and in this case study, I illustrate the decision-making, data collection, and analytical and coding processes. Specifically, I show how the researcher can condense individual themes within participant interviews into composite categories and, eventually, co-construct a description of the essential characteristics of the precarious experiences |
