Summary Edward was all but pacing in the KOOL newsroom. The staff at the California-based TV station was working an unconfirmed active shooting at the local country club on Saturday, July 4--Independence Day in the United States. As the assignment editor, Edward served as the unofficial manager of the weekend crew of one reporter and one cameraman, who were on the scene. Meanwhile, the shift's lone anchor, producer and editor worked on the newscast, which would end in the next half hour. If speculation from the scene of multiple fatalities was true, this was likely KOOL's biggest story of the year. Hence, Edward believed the KOOL management needed to be looped into the coverage. However, all communication attempts were not answered. As the newscast continues and Edward does not hear back from management, he realizes he will have to start making decisions beyond his qualifications--during a possible active shooter situation. Students should consider how they would respond during a breaking news event if they are in a similar position to Edward
