Summary I embarked on a PhD in 2009 in order to investigate exercise options for older adults with osteoarthritis. While working as an exercise physiologist in a cardiac rehabilitation clinic, my directive was to advise patients that they should walk for a minimum of 30 min per day to gain cardiovascular benefits. However, many older patients indicated that for them this was impossible due to joint pain. This fueled my interest in exploring exercise options for older adults with joint pain due to osteoarthritis and examining the potential health benefits, both perceived and measured, of alternative exercise forms. Aqua-based exercise seemed an obvious choice for older adults who have joint pain, yet on closer exploration, I found that research into this area was surprisingly limited. This case study provides an account of one of the studies which comprised my PhD, in which I compared different types of aqua-based exercise. The study explored the physiological responses to different modes of aqua-based exercise as well as the participants perspectives and preferences. There were numerous methodological challenges associated with this mixed-methods study which will be discussed in this case study. I hope that these will assist students and help them to make informed decisions relative to this type of research
